Energy Star efficiencies in other homes we have built.
The seven homes
so far at Meadowbrooke Farm were built under the Energy
Star Home
Program.
By using
this program the homes
heat and cool for less than one half the cost of a code
built home. Example of a code built house: a 2x4 exterior
wall house with r13 insulation in the walls and r38 insulation
in the ceilings.
Our homes have 7 1/4” to 10” of
insulation in the exterior walls with insulation values of
r30 to r40 and
ceiling insulation to r60. This combined with air sealing
practices that make the house extremely airtight. We then
install a heat recovery ventilation system that exchanges
the interior stale air for fresh outside air, expelling
pollutants and excess moisture, alleviating potential condensation
and
mold problems. The combination of these practices give
you the added benefit of the home being extremely comfortable,
the temperature and humidity remain very constant, drafts
are eliminated and the house is extremely quite. Outside
noise is virtually eliminated.
We have used numerous heating
systems. namely, hi efficiency gas hot air and air conditioning,
hydro air systems -which use hot water boilers or hot water
heaters to heat the
hot air, geo thermo ground source heat pumps – which
use ground water from wells or ground loops to heat and
cool the house.
The heating cost for our energy efficient
homes by square footage are as follows:
1800 to 2100 =
$400.00 to $500.00
per year;
2500 to 3000 = $650.00 to $750.00 per year;
4000 and up = $800.00
to $1000.00 per year
The added cost to bring a home to
this level of efficiency is approximately 3.5% of the construction
cost. Pay back takes approximately five years, depending
on fuel costs.
the homes are inspected and certified by “conservation
services group”. They are sponsored by the electric
and gas utilities and the federal environmental protection
agency. These homes can also be L.E.E.D.S. (building
green) certified by the same group.
